Ho ho holiday

Filed under: Blog — lukeyah @ 5:04 pm

So, the holidays are finally here, and I’m off to a great start, making it into the lab at 9:30 on monday morning!!! I have to say, it did make me feel somewhat righteous as I tended to my project after a term of neglect. Perhaps, my newfound attitude of responsibility will save my impending progress report. However, I knew the dedication was somewhat fickle, as I ran out of the lab cheerfully at 12pm to head to a Christmas lunch and spend the rest of the day eating, drinking and generally being merry (not, for once, in the drunken sense!).

All said and done, I made it in today too and realised that maybe, just maybe I might understand what I’m doing. This is very encouraging as I have been told by many before me that most students never understand their project until the week they write it up. More likely though, I’ve just managed to fool myself into thinking that I actually understand. 3 more days to go and then the holiday fun will really and truly begin. In the meantime, I’m off for dinner and a bottle of wine to celebrate a great institution with one of my friends (that of ‘Sunday Night Drinks’ – where we used to solve the world’s problems over a drink or two just before the week began).

The bowels, they are a’ turnin’…

Hmm… I’m not quite sure what the ‘a’ stands for, any suggestions? Anyway, I just returned to uni after taking 3 days off last week + the weekend to recover from a lower GI viral illness i.e. lots of diarrhea. Never before have I been so happy to do a solid poo! During 3 days alone at home, I watched a lot of DVDs (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Lawrence of Arabia, Bad Boys 1 and 2, Daredevil, Cars, Pirates of the Caribbean 2), and I did a lot of thinking. I pondered the meaning of life, the nature/existence of God, and the true spelling of diarrhea. After 3 years of med school, it turns out I still wasn’t sure (apparently both diarrhea and diarrhoea are acceptable, weird). A friend also asked me what the plural of chicken is, and I am as yet unconvinced that chickens is the real answer.

Yes, I have gone slightly crazy but then I’ve always been that way inclined. Somewhere, between now and my last blog, I had an article published in the most illustrious of medical student publications: medical student, on the future of patient records on the NHS. I also wrote a rant on why you should be using linux which may interest you, if you don’t like windows, or want it free.

Right, toodles for now, I’m off to a bavarian joint for some schnitzel (no, I don’t exactly know what that is but it is no doubt some form of meat. Unfortunately, I’m still off the drink so there’ll be no beer for me…
